This year’s Super Bowl commercials ranged from ho-hum to pure laughing-out-loud. There were even those of the inspirational variety. Although the ads may have eventually been overshadowed by the amazing comeback of the New England Patriots in their 34-28 victory, some of them still stood out.
Controversy also played a part in a couple, but it was limited and those ads could also be left up to interpretation. Overall, the anticipated commercials provided a pleasant break for a game that seemed like a blow-out in the first half and perhaps gave some relief as the second half overturned expectations.
Here are the seven best Super Bowl ads for 2017:
1. Kia — Comic actress Melissa McCarthy gave viewers plenty of laughs in her appearance for Kia Eco Hybrid. She made fun of her tree-hugging, environmental causes that ended quite surprisingly in slapstick style.
2. Budweiser — This ad paid homage to Adolphus Busch, who traveled to America as an immigrant in a short, dramatized story. This re-creation of the founding of the company stirred different emotions, but in the end, it was just an inspiring story.
3. Buick — Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers makes a magical appearance in a pee-wee football game. He even manages to overshadow model Miranda Kerr walking out of a Buick.
4. Skittles — Another funny commercial that features someone tossing Skittles into a home. The candies are enjoyed by everyone from a dad and grandma to a robber and a beaver.
5. T-Mobile — The “Unlimited Moves” spot stars Justin Bieber and dancing gigs by different characters. The extras seemed to enjoy the “shimmity shake” during the promotion.
6. Mr. Clean — This one was perhaps the most interesting or sexy, or just romantic. A woman imagines Mr. Clean jiggling to his cleaning, only for her to be surprised by her husband.
7. Squarespace — Actor John Malkovich plays his low-keyed anger, wondering why he can’t get a domain name in his own name. It shows a problem many people might have.
