'60 Minutes': Tesla Engine Sounds Added by Editor Were a Mistake

CBS on Monday admitted that an audio edit of its “60 Minutes” show about Tesla gave the company’s electric-powered car a traditional combustion engine sound that was completely wrong.

Jalopnik commented on the odd engine noises associated with a Tesla Model S that is virtually silent.

“It sounded strikingly out of place to me during the TV broadcast,” wrote Jalopnik writer Robet Sarokanich. “The strangest thing here is ... Scott Pelley highlights the features that make a Model S silent: The Tesla Model S is powered by 7,000 battery cells linked to an electric motor. No engine, no transmission, no tailpipe.”

CBS admitted the error, saying in a statement that “Our video editor made an audio editing error in our report about Elon Musk and Tesla last night. We regret the error and it is being corrected online,” Fox News reported.

Electric cars are so quiet that the European Union ruled electric cars and hybrids must have sounds added for safety reasons, Gizmodo reported. The website reported that a 2012 study found that hybrids and electric vehicles traveling under 35 mph are 37 percent more like to hit pedestrians and 66 percent more likely to hit cyclists than gas-powered cars.

Although news outlets were reporting that Tesla wasn’t commenting about the “60 Minutes” article, Elon Musk tweeted:

On that last tweet, he was likely referring to a Bloomberg article about a low-paid Tesla cafeteria worker fighting eviction, although he appeared to avoid the article's point. The article said “food and drinks” by late afternoon.
