47-Pound Tumor Removed From Woman's Stomach in 10-Hour Surgery

Friday, 13 Jun 2014 12:07 PM

A 47-pound tumor was removed from a woman's stomach this past April by surgeons at the University of Arizona Medical Center in Tucson, and the woman is now home, enjoying life.

According to Fox affiliate Tucson News Now, the procedure took 10 hours to complete. The patient, Marcey DiCaro, experienced a heart attack during the procedure, and doctors had to remove one of her kidneys that was surrounded by the tumor.

"The first time I woke up, I looked down and I thought, 'Oh my God, I don't have that huge belly anymore," DiCaro told the New York Daily News.

"If the tumor had been let go, it would have killed me. The whole team approach was wonderful. I'm happy to be going on walks and getting back in the pool and getting out and enjoying life."

The growth was discovered by a March 2012 scan, and it was discovered by surgeons once they began to be encroaching on DiCaro’s inferior vena cava, the vein carrying blood from the body to the heart and kidneys.

"Because the tumor had been pressing on the vena cava, it created a blood clot in the vein," said Dr. Tun Jie, interim chief of the division of abdominal transplant surgery at the university's medical center. "The surgery was quite challenging. This was a situation that was not easy to tackle and not all surgeons would have gone forward with it."

DiCaro had originally scheduled to have the tumor removed in 2013, but due to insurance troubles, the originally scheduled surgery was canceled the night before.

Through the Affordable Care Act, sometimes referred to as "Obamacare," DiCaro was able to obtain new insurance in 2014 and have the surgery on April 17. She said she was thankful for Obama "standing by" the healthcare legislation, saying it helped save her life.

Before and after the operation, she practiced Reiki healing, quantum healing, and energy healing techniques to help calm her senses.
