A 3rd baby has died after being thrown out of an NYC apartment window — the third such instance in as many months — and the child's mother has now been charged with murder.
The 6-month-old girl, Junilah Lawrence, was thrown from a
sixth-floor window in the Bronx this week, The Associated Press reported. Witnesses told the news agency that the baby's mother, 27-year-old Tenisha Fearon, allegedly dangled the child outside of the window before tossing her.
"And then that's when the neighbors started screaming, 'No, no, no, no!'" witness Lizette Rodriguez told the AP. "They were yelling at her: 'Don't do it! Think about it.'"
The New York Times reported that Fearon has been charged with murder.
"I heard the thump when I was on the phone with 911," Rodriguez said in describing the moment when Junilah landed. "And I gasped, 'Oh my God.'"
Neighbor Gregorio Lopez said he heard a noise from the apartment, including a man yelling, "Please God, please help us!" Lopez said he looked into Fearon's apartment and was scared that the woman, who was naked, would try to harm three other children in the as well.
Police told the AP that three children, ages 10, 8, and 3, were taken to an area hospital after the incident and appeared to be unharmed.
In the other recent incidents, a newborn girl with her umbilical cord still attached was dropped out of a window in the University Heights borough, the AP said, and a Queens woman also tossed her 1-month-old son to his death.
The newborn's mother, who has been charged with murder and manslaughter, told police she hid her pregnancy and threw the baby from the seventh story after she gave birth, according to the AP.
The Queens woman told police she believed an evil spirit possessed her son and she was "stopping the pain" when she threw him out the window.
Fearon's sister, Alicia Fearon, told The Times, "Tenisha loved her children dearly, and she cared for her children 100 percent. This is a shocker for us."
