The cement truck driver and two men who had come to help him were killed in the accident, the station reported. The driver of the tractor-trailer and a couple in a sedan sustained minor injuries.
The 287 accident occurred near exit 66 at about 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
The
tractor-trailer and the sedan burst into flames, CBS New York reported. The men were outside of their vehicles when they were killed.
According to The Associated Press, the tractor-trailer was carrying a load of bricks.
The cause of the crash is under investigation. Capt. Stephen Jones, a state police spokesman, said details of the crash were not immediately clear, including
how long the workers had been on the highway, NJ.com said.
Northbound lanes were closed for more than six hours, and delays stretched as far as six miles.
The National Transportation Safety Board wasn’t involved in the investigation, agency spokesman Keith Holloway said.
"Typically, we will investigate if preliminary information provide a potential to explore issues that can possibly lead to safety recommendations," Holloway said, according to NJ.com. "Particularly, if the issues are not currently being covered by ongoing investigations."
