An inebriated New Mexico man who used his 13-year-old son as a getaway driver after shooting at gas station patrons was arrested Saturday night.
The Associated Press reported that Sergio Barrientos-Hinojosa, 33, forced his son to take him to a local gas station in Albuquerque so he could purchase beer.
After they arrived at the gas station, he apparently got in an argument with a fellow customer, drew a handgun, and opened fire.
What the dumb criminal didn't know was that just across the street, 20 to 30 police officers had set up a drunk-driving checkpoint near the intersection of San Mateo Boulevard and Candelaria Road.
Police heard several shots fired, and said Barrientos-Hinojosa then ordered his son to drive away while he fired into the air.
A number of squad cars caught up with Barrientos-Hinojosa just a few blocks away. Police said that Barrientos-Hinojosa was belligerent during his arrest, and yelled racial slurs.
"The 13-year-old looked completely shell-shocked at that moment," said Officer Simon Drobik, a spokesman for the Albuquerque Police.
"It’s crazy, it's disgusting, and it’s definitely out of line," Ryan Schmitt, a neighbor who lives nearby,
told KRQE News.
Barrientos-Hinojosa will likely face weapons charges and child abuse charges this week.
