"13 Reasons Why," the teen suicide-themed series, has been renewed by Netflix for a third season, with 13 new episodes slated to premier in 2019, Deadline.com reported, and season two has just been released.
The streaming service announced the pickup Wednesday with a teaser trailer posted to social media and the question on everyone's lips – "What happens now?"
There has been speculation about whether the new season would carry on telling the story of Hannah Baker, played by Katherine Langford, who left behind 13 audiotapes for her classmates who are struggling to understand why she took her life.
The controversial teen drama became an instant phenomenon after being launched in March 2017 and season two has just been released, continuing the story of Baker's death and how it affects those around her.
However, season 3 may break away from the original plotline.
"Should we get a season 3, the loss of Hannah will continue to be the inciting traumatic event for this group of kids and parents. It will always be part of the story," showrunner Brian Yorkey previously told Entertainment Weekly.
"But I don’t see a tremendous continued presence for Hannah because I think we needed her to finish telling everyone else’s side of her story and we needed her so that Clay could get to a point of saying, 'I love you and I let you go.'"
Yorkey noted that, "if the story does continue, and certainly there is lots more to know about a lot of these characters, then the spotlight focus on Hannah Baker is probably done."
"13 Reasons Why" has drawn its fair share of criticism for its graphic depiction of a teenager's suicide.
However, Netflix has used it as a platform to reach out to the public and spread awareness about teen suicide.
