They weren't dalmatians, but 103 puppies were rescued Tuesday after a speeding truck carrying them to pet stores ran off the road into a ditch and overturned.
New York state troopers rescued the puppies and took them to a local veterinary hospital and the local SPCA for treatment and care.
Only five of the 103 puppies were injured when the truck being driven by Emily Woodrum of Missouri left the road’s shoulder and overturned in a ditch in upstate New York near Avoca, according to the New York Daily News.
None of the injured puppies, which were being delivered to pet stores in numerous locations, had life-threatening injuries.
According to the Daily News, the puppies were of various breeds and probably came from a puppy mill. The local SPCA said the puppies showed no signs of ill treatment, and the uninjured pups were returned to their out-of-state owner, who was not identified.
“While we too abhor puppy mills, we know of no means to legally confiscate the animals only because there is a strong likelihood that a puppy came from one,” Finger Lakes SPCA said in a statement, NBC News reported. “A formal release of ownership for these animals is being pursued.”
It was not known whether Woodrum faces any charges in the accident or what led to the truck running off the road.
Although most of the puppies were unharmed, one fractured its jaw and another had a fractured leg, NBC News said. Three other puppies received minor injuries in the crash.
