10,000 Year Old Arrowhead Found on NJ Beach Was No Crab

A 10,000 year old arrowhead was discovered on a New Jersey beach recently thanks in part to 2012's Superstorm Sandy.

Noah Cordle, a 10-year-old from Virginia, was vacationing with his family on Long Beach Island last week when he felt something scrape against his leg as he waded in the water.

What he initially thought was a crab turned out to be a pointy, black Paleoindian arrowhead about 2.5 inches long, according to the Asbury Park Press.

Cordle and his parents immediately reached out to Greg Lattanzi, president of the Archaeological Society of New Jersey and assistant curator of the archeology and ethnography bureau of the New Jersey State Museum in Trenton.

"I was basically blown away," Lattanzi told the Press. "Finding these points is rare. Only one other one recorded had washed up on a beach on Island Beach State Park in '94 or '95."

Lattanzi estimates the arrowhead to be between 8,000 and 11,000 years old and said that Superstorm Sandy may have churned up the seafloor and unearthed the artifact.

The Cordles plan to donate the arrowhead to a museum, but only after Noah brings it to show off at school.

"I think it's super cool that this happened," Andrea Cordle, Noah's mother, told the Press. "But it's not ours. It's for everybody. My father-in-law died recently and he collected arrowheads and my husband thinks this was from his father. We know his father would have loved to see it. And from the bottom of my soul, I feel it's meant to be seen by everybody."
