It’s been 16 years since 19 terrorists hijacked airliners and killed 2,977 Americans. It was one of those momentous days that those who lived through will never forget.
But time marches on and new generations know these events only as history. An analysis of Census Bureau data shows that 69,376,247 Americans have been born since that tragic day. With 325,779,795 Americans alive today, that means fully 21 percent were born after the deadly attacks.
Another 25,779,131 were six or under at the time of the attack and probably have no real memory of the event. So, the horrible reality of 9/11 is nothing more than history for over 95 million Americans alive today.
The table below shows the number of Americans alive today who were alive for selected major historical events.[1]

The Census Bureau estimates that the U.S. population currently increases by an average of one new person every 12 seconds.[2]
