The United States has 56,213 military personnel permanently stationed in Japan. That’s more than the U.S. has stationed in any other country in the world.

Number two on the list is Germany with 35,220 troops, followed by South Korea with 26,311. Italy is home to 12,991, and the United Kingdom hosts 9,119 soldiers.

President Trump has been advocating plans to have these countries pay a larger share of the costs to house and maintain these military forces abroad.

Each weekday, Scott Rasmussen’s Number of the Day explores interesting and newsworthy topics at the intersection of culture, politics, and technology. Columns published on Ballotpedia reflect the views of the author.
