Democrats Propose National Park on the Moon

By    |   Tuesday, 09 July 2013 03:19 PM EDT

Two House Democrats have proposed a bill to create a national historical park on the surface of the moon to commemorate the Apollo moon landings.

According to The Hill, Reps. Donna Edwards of Maryland and Eddie Bernice Johnson of Texas, members of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, are seeking to establish the park to protect the sites where astronauts landed between 1969 and 1972 in anticipation of an increase in commercial moon landings.

"As commercial enterprises and foreign nations acquire the ability to land on the Moon, it is necessary to protect the Apollo lunar landing sites for posterity," says the text of the Apollo Lunar Landing Legacy Act, according to The Hill.

The park would be established within a year of the bill’s passage and would be run by both the Department of the Interior and NASA, the Hill reported. After that period, the proposal requires the government to submit the site to the United Nations for approval as a World Heritage Site.

The measure also stipulates that the government can accept donations from companies and foreign governments to help manage the sites and "provide visitor services and administrative facilities within reasonable proximity to the Historical Park," according to The Hill.
