A supercomputer made with all-Chinese parts was named the fastest in the world Monday, and China also has beaten out the United States with the most supercomputers on the Top500 list.
The Sunway TaihuLight, which is capable of 93 million billion floating-point operations per second, was named top of the list,
according to PCWorld.
It beat out last year's winner, Tianhe-2, also made in China. But the Sunway TaihuLight uses chips made in China as opposed to the Tianhe-2, which used Intel chips.
This year's list also puts China in the lead in the number of supercomputers, with 167 for China and 165 for the second-place United States.
The third-fasted supercomputer on the list is American: Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Titan, according to the
Knoxville News Sentinel.
Oak Ridge currently is working on a next-generation supercomputer with IBM that is said to be capable of 150 to 300 petaflops, the News Sentinal reports. It will be called Summit and is expected to be fully operational in 2018.
