Watts, R-Okla., is using his own Web site (www.jcwatts.com). He wants Americans to sign an online petition, to be delivered to Gore within the next few days.
"The Internet can be a powerful communications tool if it is harnessed by citizens who want their voices heard immediately. Vice President Gore deserves to hear directly from Americans about their concerns with his demands to recount votes in this election until it is in his favor," Watts said.
"It is my hope," Watts continued, "that this Web site will help voters who cast their votes let the vice president know what is on their minds."
An excerpt of the petition letter to Gore reads: "Now, the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled in favor of Texas Governor George W. Bush. This is a victory for the United States and the American people, demonstrating that our great country is governed by the rule of law."
"We understand," the letter continued, "that it would be difficult to give up the election, but the facts are there and they are against you. For the good of the country, we urge you, Mr. Vice President to accept the results. It is the honorable course of action, and it is what is expected of you so America may move forward."
Watts spokesman Ron Bonjean said the petition drive began Tuesday morning, and several thousand people had signed up within the first four hours.
It appears that many Democrats are ready to throw in the towel on Gore's election chances.
Democratic National Committee Chairman Ed Rendell told the New York Times: "I'm not overly confident. It would be disingenuous to say we would be in a better position had we won in the court."
Gore campaign chairman William Daley told the Times that time was running out for Gore. "Obviously, the clock is a problem."
Some House Democrats believe the end is near for Gore. Rep. Neil Abercrombie, D-Hawaii, told the Philadelphia Inquirer, "It's a huge blow.
"There's no doubt Gore won," he claimed, "but he's not going to get the votes."
Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., told the New York Times: "Obviously, the end is in sight. He's got one more appeal, and he'll probably lose it, and it's over. I think the Republicans have successfully managed to block an accurate count and, based on that, George W. Bush will be president."
Rep. James Traficant, D-Ohio, broke ranks with his fellow Democrats and told reporters on Capitol Hill, "It's time for the courts and the lawyers to get out of the way and certify George W. Bush as president."
