According to Fox News:
Even as fighting between Israelis and Palestinians broke out anew, Netanyahu made a dramatic landing Monday at Ben-Gurion airport near Tel Aviv after an extended stay in the United States.
He was mobbed by journalists, who demanded to know if he had returned to Israel to run for prime minister against Barak.
They received no clear answer, which did nothing to quell the excited speculation that this is precisely what Netanyahu intends.
A year and a half ago, Netanyahu was trounced in the election that put Barak into power, ending Netanyahu's three years in office, from 1996-99, that had been marked by constant friction with the Palestinians and sporadic outbursts of violence.
Barak came into office on a wave of optimism that he would be able to bring about the peace that had eluded Netanyahu.
But the opposite happened. Peace between Israelis and Palestinians seems even more distant.
Although Barak had won a four-year term in 1999, his allies in Parliament began deserting him in July. Peace negotiations with the Palestinians fell apart. Serious violence erupted in September. Barak's standings in opinion polls sank.
During those 18 months, Netanyahu kept a relatively low profile, much of the time in America.
Now, he holds a commanding double-digit lead over Barak in the polls.
Benjamin Netanyahu is back.
