Selectmen voted unanimously Monday night to permit a live performance Saturday night on the Revolutionary War site.
Under pressure from non-Christian groups, selectmen last summer decided to end the practice of having a permanent creche during the Christmas season featuring figurines representing Mary, Joseph, the baby Jesus, the Magi and shepherds. As reported in NewsMax.com, a federal judge upheld the decision this month.
However, the Rev. Thomas DiLorenzo of Holy Rosary Catholic Church offered to provide a live cast of biblical characters and animals for the Saturday night performance, the Boston Herald reported Tuesday.
"We're not doing this as a protest," DiLorenzo said. "We'll be on the Battle Green, but we won't be battling. We'll be worshipping."
Selectman Peter Enrich said the nativity scene featuring live performers "is a completely appropriate and very nice way to celebrate the holiday."
