An aide to Senate President John McKay said that the lawmakers would wait until after failed Democrat candidate Vice President Al Gore addresses the nation tonight at 9 p.m., when reportedly he will finally concede to President-elect Bush.
The aide would not speculate on whether the Senate would stop the process in the event of a concession, but said that the Senate would remain in session until Dec. 18 and could name a slate at any time until then. Regardless, the Senate will reconvene Thursday at 2 p.m. to discuss its next step.
The Florida House of Representatives on Tuesday approved a slate of electors pledged to Bush, before the Supreme Court effectively killed any chance of Gore's winning Florida's disputed contest later that night. The court approved a stay of a hand recount of ballots requested by the Bush team on the grounds that it was unconstitutional.
