There are three institutions that can undo this ruling. First, there is the
Florida Legislature, which, if it needed a reason to pop its nemeses, the
Florida Supremes, this is it. It will appoint President-elect Bush's slate of electors on
Dec. 12. It has had enough of this election by lawyer.
Second, there is the United States Supreme Court, which in its Monday ruling
made it pretty darned clear that the Florida high court should not do this.
These two courts are now playing chicken with one another. I think I know
who's going to win this game.
Finally, should this thing somehow work its way to the House of
Representatives, as it did when Hayes and Tilden each had a slate of electors
from Florida (is it the water here?), the Republican House will give it to
Bush.
In the meantime, look for more lies from David Boies, more dimpled chads counted
as votes, more shredding of whatever is left of the public's respect for
courts, and more sleepless nights for those of us who feel they are seeing
the end of a nation.
