But you know what? That'd be the wrong thing to do. In fact, be wary of
anyone on our side who gloats and gleefully pokes a stick in the eye of
Gore's supporters over his defeat. Because there's been enough name calling,
enough gloating, enough anger and certainly enough division over the
presidential election of 2000 to last a few lifetimes.
Sure, the right side won. The rule of law was finally upheld over something
important in this country. The man who rightfully won the state of Florida,
under their election laws and standards, is going to be the president.
But if those of us who are relieved at the U.S. Supreme Court's decision don't
know how to act like gracious winners, we'll sink to the level of Jesse
Jackson or Alan Dershowitz. Let them whine about the ruling. Who really
cares if some radical liberal congresswoman thinks this decision stinks?
This has been a hard-fought, well-earned, glorious victory for George W. Bush
and Dick Cheney. And with Republicans in control of the White House,
Congress, and (let's face it) the U.S. Supreme Court, the next few years will
be exciting ones, indeed.
But let's follow the gracious and dignified
example of President-elect Bush and resist the temptation to gloat. We
should leave that task to the shrill liberal voices who pollute our airwaves.
Heck, they're better at whining than we are, anyway ...
