An interim House committee's report detailing an investigation into the origins of the coronavirus outbreak is calling for an international investigation into China’s role in covering up the pandemic.

The report, released Monday by Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, looks into the origins of COVID-19 and how the Chinese Communist Party and World Health Organization handled the initial outbreak in Wuhan, China, The Texan reports.

The report calls for the U.S. to join an international investigation with other WHO member states and Taiwan to determine the extent of China’s involvement in covering up the virus outbreak.

“After months of investigating, it’s become crystal clear the Chinese Communist Party’s cover-up of the coronavirus, especially in the early days of the outbreak, played a significant role in turning what could have been a local epidemic into a global pandemic,” McCaul, who is the ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the chairman of the House GOP China Task Force, told The Texan.

The report states that it “is highly likely the ongoing pandemic could have been prevented.” It calls out the Chinese government, claiming that 95% of China’s cases could have been prevented if China acted differently.

The report indicates that the virus is likely naturally occurring and estimates it first infected humans in Wuhan in November 2019. While the report supports the notion that the virus was not created in a lab, it does recognize the theory that some experts believe it came from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

The report alleges Chinese officials blocked institutions from publishing information about an “unknown disease,” had samples of the virus destroyed and allowed travel to take place.

In addition to blaming China for its role in the global spread of the virus, the report also points the finger at the WHO.

The report calls for director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to resign.

“[U]nfortunately, the World Health Organization under the leadership of Director General Tedros only exacerbated the problem by repeatedly ignoring warnings about the severity of the virus, including from their own health experts, while at the same time parroting the CCP’s propaganda without independently confirming their claims,” McCaul told The Texan.

The report claims that the WHO did not investigate concerns raised by Taiwan about the possibility of the virus spreading among people. The report states that when the WHO declared the virus couldn’t be transmitted from human to human in January, it “contributed to a regional epidemic turning into a pandemic.”

“This was a failure of monumental proportions and it is imperative that we uncover the truth so we can set up future safeguards to prevent this from happening yet again,” McCaul said.
