Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions told senators Tuesday he does not know whether voting fraud had been committed during the November election, in response to a question about accusations made by President-elect Donald Trump.
"I don't know what the president-elect meant or was thinking when he made that comment or what facts he may have had to justify his statement," the Republican attorney general nominee told the Senate Judiciary Committee at his confirmation hearing.
Sen. Al Franken, a Minnesota Democrat, asked Sessions whether he agreed with Trump's assertion last month more than 2.8 million fraudulent votes were cast because he had lost the popular vote to Hillary Clinton.
Trump said last month on Twitter he would have won the popular vote "if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally."
"I would just say that every election needs to be managed closely — and we need to ensure that there is integrity in it," Sessions told Franken. "I do believe we regularly have fraudulent activities occur during election cycles."
