Huckabee Campaigns for Republicans on Home Turf

Thursday, 09 Oct 2014 01:14 PM

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee is campaigning for Republicans on his home turf, finding that a political landscape that had been dominated by Democrats since Reconstruction is now a two-party state.

Huckabee appeared with former congressman Asa Hutchinson in Little Rock on Thursday morning to endorse him for Arkansas governor, then set out for western Arkansas to back a Senate bid by U.S. Rep. Tom Cotton.

Cotton hopes to unseat two-term Democratic U.S. Sen. Mark Pryor. Hutchinson is running against another former congressman, Democrat Mike Ross, for governor.

Huckabee's trip comes days after former President Bill Clinton, who also was an Arkansas governor, campaigned for Democratic nominees in the state.

Huckabee was governor from 1996-2007. Democrats controlled the Legislature throughout his tenure, but the GOP took control in 2012.
