Only three of 10 Democratic presidential candidates at Thursday's debate — Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Kamala Harris, D-Calif., and former Vice President Joe Biden — said they would eliminate private health insurance as part of a healthcare reform plan.
NBC moderator Lester Holt asked for a show of hands of those favoring an elimination of private health insurance in favor of a single-payer, government-run health plan like "Medicare for All."
Sanders and Harris raised their hands, as did Biden.
But though Harris and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., are co-sponsors of Sanders' Medicare for All bill in the Senate, Gillibrand did not, saying the quickest way to get to universal healthcare is to let people "buy in" to the Medicare program.
In Wednesday's debate of Democratic candidates, only Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio raised their hands.
