President Donald Trump on Thursday instructed Congress to fix the Choice Program for veterans by Memorial Day, tweeting that it "needs work and is running out of" money.
Trump's tweet comes the week after new reports about unsanitary conditions at a Veterans Affairs clinic in Salt Lake City and a fly infestation at a West Los Angeles center.
The Veterans Choice program was cut out of the $1.3 trillion spending plan approved by Congress and signed by the president in March. It's a program that could run out of funding this month or in June, VA officials warned.
The program allows vets to seek care at private centers if they live too far from a VA facility or in the case of egregious wait times to get into a VA clinic, as was the case with the Phoenix VA.
