President Donald Trump said Friday that "I love New York" but that "I go back as little as possible" because of the extensive and expensive security procedures regarding his stay at Trump Tower in Manhattan.
"Going back is very expensive for the country because they close up Fifth Avenue and they close up 56th Street," he told Martha MacCallum on Fox News. "I live in Trump Tower, which is right, smack in the middle of everything.
"I always feel a little-bit guilty when I go there."
Trump, who will mark his 100th day as president on Saturday at Trump Tower, has spent many weekends at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida since taking office in January.
He said that he did not like visiting his resorts because of press attacks that he is "relaxing."
"If I go to one of my clubs in New Jersey, they will say I'm going to play golf," he said. "I couldn't care less about golf."
His properties, he said, could easily accommodate his Secret Service detail – "and they don't have to close up streets.
"The problem is every time I go to a club is that I'm out there having fun," he said. "I don't have fun.
"When I go to a club, I'm working.
"They close up the entire midtown section of Manhattan," Trump said. "I don't know if it's all necessary, so I go back as little as possible."
