Former President Donald Trump made an unannounced appearance over the weekend at a campaign event for Sarah Sanders, who is running for governor of Arkansas, The Hill reports.
"Great weekend on the campaign trail featuring a surprise appearance at one of my events by President Trump," Sanders tweeted on Sunday evening.
Sanders, the daughter of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, touted her work in the Trump administration, where she was press secretary, in her campaign announcement video in January.
"I took on the media, the radical left, and their cancel culture, and I won," she said. "As governor, I will be your voice and never let them silence you."
Trump said in a statement after Sanders' announcement that Sanders is a "warrior" and will "always fight for the people of Arkansas." He said that she will do "what is right, not what is politically correct."
He added, "Sarah is strong on borders, tough on crime and fully supports the Second Amendment and our great law enforcement officers. She loves our military and veterans — and her home state of Arkansas. She will be a GREAT governor and she has my complete and total endorsement."
She responded, "Thank you President Trump for your endorsement and for always believing in me. As governor I will defend our freedom and lead with heart."
Trump also appeared at a Florida fundraiser for Big Dog Ranch Rescue over the weekend, where he stoked rumors about his daughter-in-law Lara Trump running for Senate.
"I didn’t exactly prepare for this, but I was walking by, and I heard everybody screaming," Trump said, according to The New York Post. "I want to thank Lara, who has been so incredible — and I don’t know, are you running for the Senate? I hear she’s going to run for the Senate!"
The former president has thrown his support behind several Republican candidates up for election in the next year or two, including Arkansas Sen. John Boozman and Lt. Gov. Tim Griffin’s run for Arkansas attorney general.
"Lieutenant Governor Tim Griffin, who is running for attorney general, is a highly respected Army veteran who will always fight for the great people of Arkansas," Trump said in a statement earlier this month. "Tim will be tough on Crime, defend our Second Amendment, loves our Military and our Vets, and will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the brave Men and Women of Law Enforcement. Tim Griffin has my Complete and Total Endorsement!"
He said in a statement last month: "Where necessary and appropriate, I will back primary rivals who espouse Making America Great Again and our policy of America First. We want brilliant, strong, thoughtful, and compassionate leadership."
