All indications are that for now, President Donald Trump is going to stay the course and do nothing when it comes to special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe, according to reports.

That is, the president continues to reject pressure from former chief strategist Steve Bannon — and allies outside the White House — to fire Mueller.

"The thinking is, 'You will take the same abuse whether you go after (Mueller) or you don't,'" CNN quoted one source.

But while Bannon is off advocating firing Mueller or pulling his funding, legal advisers to the president scoff at that, saying Trump has no intention of doing either.

"This is Bannon's wishful thinking," one person close to the president told CNN. "It's never going to happen. It's just not going to happen."

"The die has been set," White House attorney Ty Cobb said Tuesday, Politico reported. "I think our approach has clearly been of assistance and moving us along quickly to free the country from this investigation as expeditiously as possible."

That also means not attacking Mueller and his investigation, Politico reported.

"I don't support any kind of retaliatory action," Trump personal attorney Jay Sekulow told Politico. "That's not the position we're advocating. We're cooperating with the special counsel."

But who knows if and when that will change with an unpredictable president, still privately reeling from Monday's indictments of three former campaign aides, including chairman Paul Manafort.

"He's insane about it because he's wondering how many of these things are there, out there, that I don't know about?" a person close to the president told CNN.
