An overwhelming 79 percent of Republicans approve of President Donald Trump's performance in Helsinki alongside Russia president Vladimir Putin, according to a new Axios/SurveyMonkey poll.
Support from Trump's own party stands in stark contrast to the otherwise strong majority that disapproved of Trump's dig on the U.S. intelligence community during the summit earlier this week.
The results, according to Axios:
- 58 percent overall disapprove of Trump's performance in Helsinki.
- 40 percent overall approve of Trump's performance.
- 62 percent of Independents disapprove of Trump's performance.
- 33 percent of Independents approve.
- 18 percent of Republicans disapprove.
It's that unconditional support from Trump's base that scares Republican lawmakers from scolding the president too vociferously, even when the president is absolving Putin and Russia from election interference.
