President Donald Trump's son Eric Tuesday insisted that his father pays a "fortune" in taxes and accused the New York Times of sitting on its expose until just before the first debate.
"I printed that article out," Trump, the executive vice president of the Trump Organization, said on Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "It was 35 pages long. Does anyone really believe that Susan Craig wrote that article on Friday afternoon? No. They have been writing that article for three months and they wanted to drop it the morning before the debate. These are disgusting people."
He also accused "somebody at the IRS" of leaking his father's tax information.
"I believe this is the IRS scandal of this generation," said Trump. "We saw it happen under the Obama years. You saw what happened in 2013 and 2014 when the IRS was targeting conservative groups. Now they are targeting my father because he is doing a great job and they don't like him."
He added that he thinks that there will be a similar "October surprise" come out every day between now and the election to try to discredit his father
"We have a great company," Trump said "We are one of the lowest-debt real estate companies. We have the best assets in the world ... If you put $200 million into a project, you have things like depreciation and tax credits and other things. That's part of investing billions and billions of dollars in a nation."
Trump also discussed an opinion piece from the New York Times written by a secret voter for his father. She said she is gay and did not want to give her last name because it would not go well with her coworkers to know she supports Trump's campaign.
"That person is there," said Trump. "I see it every day. The LGBTQ community is incredible. You can see how they have come out in full force for my father every day." He added that members of the community thank his father for protecting their neighborhoods and cities.
He said there are also many Latinos and others who support his father because they want security, a great economy, and law and order.
