President Donald Trump on Thursday launched into a new attack on mainstream news media with targeted attacks on CNN and NBC and a scatterhot blast against "dishonest" media.
In a Twitter barrage, Trump reiterated his claims of s biased news coverage against him by CNN, saying the AT&T-owned news broadcaster should fire network news chief "Little Jeff" Zucker.
"Little Jeff Z has done a terrible job, his ratings suck, & AT&T should fire him to save credibility!" Trump said in a post on Twitter.
He also took a swipe at NBC News Chairman Andy Lack and accused NBC News of "fudging" his May 2017 interview that came days after he fired then FBI Director James Comey and in which he cited the federal Russia investigation.
"What’s going on at @CNN is happening, to different degrees, at other networks - with @NBCNews being the worst," he said in a second tweet. "The good news is that Andy Lack(y) is about to be fired(?) for incompetence, and much worse. When Lester Holt got caught fudging my tape on Russia, they were hurt badly!"
The Holt reference points to an interview Trump did with the NBC journalist last year related to his firing of FBI Directory James Comey.
Special Counsel Robert Mueller is looking into whether there was any collusion with Trump's campaign as well as any potential obstruction of justice. Mueller was named special counsel on May 17. Legal experts have said Mueller's team must weigh whether the president acted with an improper, or "corrupt," intent when he took actions such as firing Comey.
Trump has denied any collusion with Russia and has said that he did not fire Comey over the federal probe.
In his NBC interview, Trump first called Comey a "showboat" and a "grandstander." He then said he knew firing Comey could "confuse people" and "lengthen out the investigation."
"In fact when I decided to just do it, I said to myself, I said, 'You know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made-up story, it's an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won," he told NBC at the time.
Trump's explanation to NBC ran counter to previous explanations by his administration, which had said the president was following the recommendation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and No. 2 Justice Department official Rod Rosenstein.
Trump, in a string of tweets last week, said he had nothing to hide from Mueller's probe.
Representatives for NBC News, which is part of Comcast Corp. , could not be immediately reached for comment.
In a third Twitter post Thursday, Trump took aim again at the "dishonest" media.
"I just cannot state strongly enough how totally dishonest much of the Media is. Truth doesn’t matter to them, they only have their hatred & agenda. This includes fake books, which come out about me all the time, always anonymous sources, and are pure fiction. Enemy of the People!"
