In searching for the right candidate to be the nation's top diplomat, President-elect Donald Trump is displaying his own brand of diplomacy.

Such is the case with Trump's reported 90-minute meeting with chief critic Mitt Romney over the weekend to discuss the 2012 GOP nominee's candidacy for secretary of state.

The two men, who exchanged fiercely personal barbs during the primary and election season, moved on to have a "far-reaching conversation" about what's happening in the world, The Washington Post reported.

"One of the things that drives Gov. Romney is a sense of duty, and I think that sense of duty is what's driving him to help President-elect Trump in any way he can as he puts together a government," Kevin Madden told CNN before the Saturday meeting in New Jersey.

The meeting with Romney was one of Trump's latest with a former foe.

Trump has had prior meetings with vanquished primary foe Sen. Ted Cruz, staunch Never Trumper Gov. Nikki Haley, and on Sunday Chris Christie, who Trump not only defeated in the primary, but also demoted from head of his transition team two weeks ago, Fox News reported.

But by far the biggest surprise was Romney, who had cast Trump as a "phony" and a "fraud" while being called a "choke artist" by Trump. It's not only a thawing within the GOP, but a look ahead to find common ground within a Trump administration.

"If you look at the atmospherics, the macro level, there may actually be more there than meets the eye in terms of commonality between things that Donald Trump has expressed and Gov. Romney has expressed," former Romney aide Lanhee Chen told CNN.
