Seventy-four percent of voters back President Donald Trump's decision to stop separating families at the U.S.-Mexico border, while 15 percent oppose it, a new Politico/Morning Consult poll reveals.
Here are the highlights of the survey results released on Wednesday:
- 81 percent of Republicans say they approve on the Trump administration's overall immigration policy, while 12 percent disapprove.
- 17 percent of Democrats approve of Trump's immigration policy, compared to 77 percent who do not.
- 38 percent of independents say they approve on the administration's immigration policy, while 50 percent do not.
- 43 percent of all those polled say they approve of Trump's immigration policy, compared to 49 percent who disapprove.
- 41 percent say they trust Democratic lawmakers more to handle immigration, compared to 37 percent who trust GOP lawmakers more. 22 percent had no opinion.
The survey was conducted June 22-24 – before the Supreme Court upheld the president's order stopping citizens from seven nations from entering the U.S., Politico noted.
The rest of the poll breaks down like this:
- 43 percent approve of the job Trump is doing as president, while 54 percent do not.
- 44 percent would likely vote for the Democratic candidate in their Congressional district if the election was held today, compared to 37 percent who would cast their ballot for the Republican candidate.
- 36 percent trust the national political media more to tell the truth, while 33 percent trust the Trump White House more. 31 percent did not know or had no opinion.
The poll surveyed 1,989 registered voters. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
