Gowdy: Democrats May Worry That Trump Dossier is 'Fiction'

Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., said Democrats might be resisting Republican efforts to get information about a dossier on President Donald Trump because they are worried it might contain falsehoods.

Democrats have claimed that Gowdy and other Republicans want to help the president by discrediting the dossier, according to Gowdy in an interview with The Daily Caller.

"I don't know why anyone — from (California Democratic Rep.) Adam Schiff, to Vanity Fair, to Rachel Maddow — would not be curious whether or not the world's premier law enforcement agency relied upon a dossier in connection with an investigation without vetting it," Gowdy said about the dossier, which was compiled by British spy Christopher Steele.

"For the life of me, I don't understand why they are focused on this unless they are fearful that the [FBI] did rely on a piece of fiction," Gowdy said in The Daily Caller.

Republicans have led an effort to subpoena Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Christopher Wray to get information on the dossier, a move that Democrats have criticized. The FBI and DOJ have not responded to "months and months of requests" for information on the dossier, Gowdy said in The Daily Caller.

The congressman said he did not need to know the identities of Steele's sources or intermediaries, or how the information was obtained; he only wants to be assured that the dossier was vetted, Gowdy told The Daily Caller.

"Just tell me how you either sought to corroborate it, how you vetted it. Did the FBI rely upon it? Did the DOJ rely upon it? If yes, to what extent, and how did you vet the sources and sub-sources in the document?" Gowdy asked in The Daily Caller.

"It is relevant to ask whether or not a law enforcement agency relied on this dossier—or any evidence—without vetting it," Gowdy said.

Gowdy's tactics could help the Russians, according to Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn., speaking in Friday's Vanity Fair report that Gowdy mentioned.

"It's an attempt to both delegitimize the dossier and delegitimize the FBI, particularly the work that was done under James Comey," Himes said, referring to the former FBI director who Trump fired.
