House Oversight chair Trey Gowdy rejected a request from the Democratic Women's Working Group (DWWG) to investigate sexual misconduct allegations against President Donald Trump, saying his committee doesn't prosecute crimes, Politico reports.
Gowdy, R-S.C., instead directed DWWG chairwoman Lois Frankel to the Justice Department in a letter Tuesday, copying Attorney General Jeff Sessions on the letter.
"The specific allegations set forth in your letter constitute crimes," Gowdy wrote. "This committee . . . does not, and cannot, prosecute crimes. This is true for many reasons but especially true in crimes of this serious nature."
Frankel sent a letter signed by nearly 60 female Democratic lawmakers urging Gowdy to "investigate the reports of sexual misconduct raised against President Trump."
Oversight committee ranking Elijah Cummings, D-Maryland, disagreed with Gowdy's assessment.
"Congress is in the midst of a critical and long-overdue examination of allegations against its own Members—both before and after they were elected to Congress," Cummings said in a statement. "The Oversight Committee is charged with examining similar allegations against Executive Branch employees and the President."
