Trump Rebukes Proponents of 'Really Dumb Trade Deals'

By    |   Tuesday, 28 August 2018 11:28 AM EDT

President Donald Trump took a shot Tuesday at proponents of free trade, tweeting that the U.S. loses jobs and $800 billion a year because of "really dumb trade deals."

"I smile at senators and others talking about how good free trade is for the U.S. What they don't say is that we lose jobs and over $800 billion dollars a year on really dumb trade deals … and these same countries tariff us to death. These lawmakers are just fine with this!"

Lawmakers and pundits have been reacting to the Trump administration's announcement Monday about an "understanding" with Mexico on a new trade deal.

Republican Sen. Ben Sasse said "there is reason to worry that this might be a step backward from NAFTA;" The Wall Street Journal panned the deal and former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay said Trump might have made NAFTA worse.
