Family Research Council President Tony Perkins tweeted on Friday that if the charges were true that Roy Moore, Republican candidate for the Senate in Alabama, pursued romantic relationships with teenagers decades ago, he would be disqualified from "holding a position of public trust."
Perkins, a prominent conservative, joins other Republicans in saying Moore, a former Alabama Supreme Court justice, should step down in his race for the Senate if the claims against him were true. A few prominent Republicans, including former presidential candidate Mitt Romney and Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain, believe Moore should step down regardless of whether the charges were true, the Washington Examiner reported Friday.
Four women have stepped forward saying Moore pursued romantic relationships with them at a time he would have been in his early 30s. One woman claimed she was 14 years old when he pursued her with sexual advances, The Washington Post reported Thursday.
