Sen. Tim Scott said that rapper Kanye West and President Donald Trump are different people but they have similar goals.
"The fact is, they're both focused on moving the country together, with no exclusions," Scott said Friday on Fox News' "Fox & Friends."
West has praised Trump in tweets, saying, "You don't have to agree with Trump, but the mob can't make me not love him. We are both dragon energy," West wrote Wednesday.
Trump responded Friday by tweeting that West "has performed a great service to the black community."
Trump's policies are creating opportunities for black Americans to achieve, Scott said.
"We've got to look at policies. Policies are going in the right direction," Scott said.
The congressman appeared in the "Fox & Friends" interview with Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-SC, with whom he wrote "Unified," a book in which the lawmakers discuss ways the country can get past political divisiveness.
Gowdy said that people should "focus on the things that you have in common." He noted that U2 singer Bono was friends with Jesse Helms, R-N.C., "the most conservative senator that I can recall."
"I'm convinced we have something in common with everyone. So why we run towards the divisiveness part, I don't understand. I think it's tearing our country apart," Gowdy said in the interview.
