Sen. Tim Kaine is expecting the FBI to confirm it is investigating possible links between Russia and Donald Trump's campaign, transition and administration.

The Virginia Democrat, who served as Hillary Clinton's running mate, said he anticipates FBI Director James Comey will announce the investigation is underway.

"I think many of us are expecting that he will say: 'Yes, the FBI is looking at it,'" Kaine told CNN's "New Day" program. "That's what I expect to hear. And we need to.

"When you get to the bottom line on this we have to understand everything about the ties between Russia, the Trump campaign, the Trump transition, the Trump administration, especially the degree in which Russia tried to invade the American election — because we have to protect future elections.

"We also have to give some advice to our allies. There's elections in France coming up. There's elections in Germany coming up. Russia's already been engaged in the Brexit election. They are engaged in the French election to some degree. We've got to give our allies some idea how they can protect themselves."

Politico noted Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., said Comey has indicated that he may provide a "clearer explanation" of the existence of a Russia investigation as early as Wednesday.

Whitehouse said Comey made his comments during a private meeting with him and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., on March 2.
