A Republican senator from North Carolina could potentially be in trouble ahead of his 2020 reelection campaign, according to the results of a new poll.
Key figures in the Emerson Poll:
- Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., trails Democratic State Sen. Erica Smith, 46% to 39%.
- 15% of the voters said they are undecided.
Mecklenburg County Commissioner Trevor Fuller is the other declared Democrat in the race to unseat Tillis. He was not included in the Emerson Poll.
On the Republican side, Tillis is being challenged by farm owner Sandy Smith and businessman Garland Tucker.
Tillis, whose support among some of his former backers is decreasing, previously served in the North Carolina State House from 2007-2015. From 2011-2015, he was the House speaker before heading to Washington to begin his Senate term.
