Four Republican senators plan to introduce a bill on Friday that would stop the Justice Department from bankrolling left-wing organizations.
The legislation to ban federal settlement agreements that require donations to third-party groups groups is being spearheaded by Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas, James Lankford of Oklahoma, and Orrin Hatch and Mike Lee of Utah,
The Daily Signal reports.
"In 2011, the Department of Justice directed $30 million from a banking settlement to go toward left-leaning nonprofit groups like the National Community Reinvestment Coalition and NeighborWorks America," Lankford said in a press release.
Lee added: "The Department of Justice is supposed to work for all Americans, not just whichever special interests are favored by whoever is currently in this White House."
The Signal says the Justice Department now allows corporations like banks to pay financial penalties for wrongdoing as a donation to "certain preapproved nonprofit groups."
