Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, is six points ahead of his Democratic challenger for U.S. Senate, Beto O'Rourke, according to Quinnipiac University poll results released Wednesday.
In the poll:
- 49 percent support Cruz.
- 43 percent support O’Rourke.
Breaking down that result by gender and race shows different groups supporting each candidate:
- 56 percent of men support Cruz, while 36 percent favor O'Rourke.
- 49 percent of women favor O'Rourke, while 43 percent favor Cruz.
- 61 percent of white voters favor Cruz, while 31 percent favor O'Rourke.
- 81 percent of black voters favor O'Rourke, while 14 percent support Cruz.
- 52 percent of Hispanic voters support O'Rourke, while 40 percent back Cruz.
The poll also shows Republican incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott ahead of challenger Lupe Valdez, former Dallas County sheriff.
- 51 percent support Abbott.
- 38 percent support Valdez.
In other results of the poll, more Texas voters disapprove of Trump than approve of him, with 46 percent approving and 49 percent disapproving.
Breaking down that result by party affiliation, 84 percent of Republican Texas voters approve of Trump, while 94 percent among Democrats disapprove, the poll report said.
The poll was conducted from July 26 to July 31 among 1,118 Texas voters with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
Cruz leads O'Rourke by 6.5 points on average in polls, RealClearPolitics reported.
