Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., lashed out at those teachers unions fighting to keep schools from reopening.
Rubio made his remarks on Thursday in a video posted on his Twitter account.
“Congress has provided tens of billions of dollars for public K-12 schools,” he noted. “And yet in some places teachers’ unions are asking for funding, while refusing to get back into the classrooms. Frankly, that’s just wrong. While unions fight to stay home, our students keep falling behind.
“For nearly a year now, parents across the country have helped their children learn virtually from home, but the challenges have been immense. The damage to our children has been catastrophic. But I think there’s light at the end of this tunnel.”
He pointed out that experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are now recommending that schools reopen if all the precautions are being taken.
Researchers at the CDC had written in the Journal of the American Medical Association last month that there’s “little evidence” of widespread coronavirus transmission in schools when proper precautions are followed.
“There simply is no substitute for in-person learning,” Rubio said. “Now the science is telling us it can be done safely once again.
“If a school refuses to offer students an in-person option by April 30 , 2021 — 100 days into the new Biden administration — their federal funding should be rescinded and directed toward school choice and the reopening plans of school’s that are prioritizing their students’ needs.
“I’m filing a bill that will do just that. It’s time for every elected official to take a stand and side with science and for the future of their education.”
