Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s senior campaign adviser said on Sunday the economic gains under President Donald Trump during the coronavirus pandemic have only benefited the rich.
In an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” Symone Sanders dismissed the credit the president is taking for an economy she says is still struggling.
“It is going well for folks at the top but for folks who are middle class or below, it’s going down,” she said. “The question really is, is this working for working families, and the answer is no.”
According to Sanders, it’s people who are working in the front lines of the pandemic are suffering both from fewer hours — and more risk of exposure to COVID-19.
“I’m thinking, and Joe Biden is thinking, about the folks who are truck drivers and who work as cashiers, who are working at grocery stores, autoworkers, those are folks who are at higher risk of shortened hours but also higher risk of being exposed to COVID,” she said.
“I just think we have to think about the pain that the working families across this country are experiencing right now.”
Sanders also backed away from a crack by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo that Trump, a native New Yorker, would need an army to visit New York City after threatening to defund it.
“Gov. Cuomo doesn’t work for the Biden campaign,” she said.
Biden and Harris, she added, “believe we should live in a country where the president does not incite violence or fan the flames the hate of this country, pour gasoline on tense situations.”
