Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said Tuesday the media coverage of her support for the GOP tax bill is "unbelievably sexist," according to a report in Politico.
"I believe that the coverage has been unbelievably sexist, and I cannot believe that the press would have treated another senator with 20 years of experience as they have treated me," she reportedly said. "They've ignored everything that I've gotten, and written story after story about how I'm duped. How am I duped when all your amendments get accepted?"
Collins, a key swing vote on the legislation, was a holdout on the joint House-Senate agreement until Monday. She voted for the Senate version of the bill after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and President Donald Trump promised the Senate would pass two measures to stabilize Obamacare before the end of the year.
Collins earlier this year opposed legislation to repeal Obamacare and critics of the tax bill hoped she would do the same this time around.
One report she specifically ripped was The New York Times story that said she "didn't cry" when she met with protestors suffering from medical conditions.
"I can't imagine a reporter writing that about a male senator meeting with the same group, and in fact, I have proof, because they met with [Arizona GOP Sen.] Jeff Flake," Collins reportedly said.
"So it's been extremely discouraging to see the press coverage on this given the significant impact that I've had on this bill."
