The GOP healthcare bill needs a "complete overhaul" for Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, to support it, CNN reported.
"It was really interesting being back home last week because the one and only (thing) that came up, no matter where I was, time and again, was healthcare," she told CNN Monday in the Senate hallways. "I do need a complete overhaul to get to a yes."
Collins last week said she was concerned with projections from the Congressional Budget Office that the GOP healthcare bill would leave 22 million more Americans uninsured in 2026 than under former President Barack Obama's healthcare law and that "tinkering with the bill will not be sufficient to win my support."
Senate Republicans will try to salvage their healthcare bill during a three-week stretch that starts Monday. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell delayed a decision on the vote after the CBO released its analysis, an announcement shortly followed by a promise from President Donald Trump that he would do away with Obamacare.
"We're going to solve the problem," the president told senators.
Collins said she wants to work with Democrats but that Minority Leader Chuck Schumer hasn't given her a very clear message.
"The Democratic leader has given very conflicting signals over whether or not he really wants to work with Republicans," she said. "My hope is that we can avoid the mistake that President (Barack) Obama made when he passed a major healthcare reform bill, the Affordable Care Act, without a single Republican vote."
