Florida Republicans Add Hispanics to State House

By    |   Monday, 08 Dec 2014 06:09 PM

In the Florida state legislatures, one of the 24 where the GOP captured a super majority in November, four of the 19 newly elected Republican members of the House are Hispanic.

Electing more minority and female candidates across the Sunshine State has been part of a larger effort on the part of the state's Republican party, even though Florida's Republican party had already been more diverse than the GOP in other states, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

In addition, only one of the four newly elected Hispanic GOP members is from the Miami-Dade area.

"This is the new face of the Republican Party of Florida," said Rep. Bob Cortes, one of the newly elected state Republican House members.

"You're seeing more young, fresh, Hispanic Republicans not only run for office, but win," Cortes added.

The presence of more Republican minorities and women in statehouses doesn't stop in Florida. There were a total of 42 minority and female candidates elected across the country during the midterm elections in November.

The success is partly due to an initiative of the Republican State Leadership Committee called the Future Majority Project, which put $6 million toward the effort in 2014 and focuses on "down ballot" Republican candidates running for offices such as attorney general, secretary of state and state legislator.

All together Republicans will have control 69 of 99 statehouses in 2015.
