Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, said Wednesday that Democrats could support President Donald Trump's tax plan should it provide relief to working families.
"The president wants to do two things. He wants to give significant tax relief to working families, and he wants to make sure that corporations are patriotic — that corporations actually pay decent wages and keep their jobs in this country," Brown said on Fox News.
"I want to see it," he added. "But those are the two major things that would get, I think, a bunch of Democrats to vote yes."
Brown and his fellow Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, a Republican, are set to meet with Trump on Wednesday to discuss tax reform with Trump and members of White House staff.
"I'm pleased that the White House continues to engage both Republicans and Democrats on the need for comprehensive tax reform, and I look forward to discussing how it will create more jobs, increase wages, and encourage more investment in America," Portman told the Toledo Blade.
Brown's staff told the Blade that he will push the president to prioritize tax cuts for working-class families, and to provide support for two bills. The Patriot Employers Tax Credit would give corporations an incentive to keep their businesses in the U.S., and the Working Families Tax Relief Act, which would broaden the Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit.
