A group of teachers staged a sit-in at the office of Sen. Todd Young, R-Ind., demanding he recuse himself from voting to confirm Betsy DeVos, President Donald Trump's nominee for education secretary.
Sources told WTHR-TV in Indiana that DeVos' family gave Young more than $48,000 in donations last year. The teachers claim it is a conflict of interest for Young, according to the TV station.
"Why would she pay so much, with so much desire to have this job if she were unqualified for it?" said a teacher at the sit-in. "We have her own words stating the reason she has made these large donations is because she wants this job."
Young sits on the Senate, Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, which is scheduled a Jan. 31 vote on the DeVos nomination, The Hill reports.
His staff reportedly said he does not plan to recuse himself from the vote.
