A group of 41 senators, including Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., sent a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, urging the restoration of Title X Family Planning regulations that would restrict the grantees' involvement with abortion providers.

"Section 1008 of the Public Health Service Act clearly states that no federal funds appropriated for Title X for family planning services ‘shall be used in programs where abortion is a method of family planning.' However, the program's current regulations undermine the law," a statement on Sen. Blunt's website read.

Sens. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa,.James Lankford, R-Okla., and Steve Daines, R-Mont., also signed the letter.

The group asked for the restoration of regulations that clarified that Title X programs are not allowed to promote, counsel, or refer clients for abortion, or to locate or combine with services that provide abortion.

The letter offered praise for states that have redirected Title X funding toward community health centers that provide "comprehensive health services for women, but not abortion."

In the House of Representatives, 153 congressmen and congresswomen sent a similar letter, which was posted on Rep. Dianne Black's, R-Tenn., website.
