Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, R-Texas, said special counsel Robert Mueller needed to "clean house of partisans" in his investigation into alleged collusion between Russia and the 2016 campaign of President Donald Trump.

The statement follows revelations of biased text messages sent by FBI agent Peter Strzok who was a top counterintelligence agent working on the case, The Hill reported Saturday.

"But Mueller needs to clean house of partisans," Cornyn tweeted Saturday.

Cornyn appeared to be engaging the past few days with former Attorney General Eric Holder who had tweeted on Wednesday he was "speaking on behalf of the vast majority of the American people" when he warned that "any attempt to remove Bob Mueller will not be tolerated." Cornyn replied to Holder's tweet on Friday simply saying, "You don't."

The Justice Department gave Congress text messages Strzok sent to a fellow employee and former girlfriend that were anti-Trump and pro-Hillary in nature. Mueller reportedly removed Strzok from the investigation once he learned of the messages.

During a House Judiciary Committee hearing earlier in the week, Republicans suggested Mueller's investigation could be tainted and some lawmakers called for a second special counsel to investigate whether the Russia investigation was biased, NBC reported Wednesday.
